Crypto Promoter Faces New Charges in $1.8 Billion HyperFund Fraud Case
Rodney Burton, known as "Bitcoin Rodney," has been hit with additional charges for his alleged involvement in the HyperFund pyramid scheme. The U.S. Department of Justice accuses him of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering, and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. This follows the 2024 indictments of HyperFund co-founders Xue Lee and Brenda Chunga, who misled investors with promises of returns from nonexistent crypto mining operations.
HyperFund collapsed in 2022, leaving investors stranded. The SEC previously noted the scheme relied solely on new investor funds, with no legitimate revenue source. The latest indictment underscores ongoing regulatory scrutiny of fraudulent crypto ventures.
